Since the start of 2023 I have worked as a Research Fellow (0.4) at the University of the West of England. My role is focused on developing research and facilitating knowledge exchange and professional/creative development activity across the UWE-Spike Island partnership.
Current research project:
Art school-gallery partnerships for a changed world
My current research explores what kinds of learning, teaching and development practices can be produced through partnerships between art schools and cultural organisations. Looking specifically at the challenging conditions facing today’s students and graduates, this work asks how university and gallery partners can co-generate knowledge about supporting emerging practitioners and creating more porosity between visual art communities.
I am interested to look at various models of art school-art organisation partnerships to understand how these partners are working with current student/graduate populations, what innovative practice looks like and what insights are produced. I want to understand how art school-gallery partnerships are currently addressing issues such as access to cultural work/communities, lived experience-led programming, artistic development and public engagement in their joint work. This research aims to develop knowledge about what cultural/academic partnerships do for the broader ecology and what today’s emerging practitioners need most from these alliances, in a fraught world.
